How to Plan Your New Website

Why do you need a new website?

This is an important place to start. You should ask yourself, “why do I need a website”. Make a list of reasons why you need a website and this will help to identify which type of website will be most suitable, and which features are most important to have. People have different reasons for needing a website, including but not limited to:

  • Advertising products and services
  • Displaying a portfolio
  • Creating a blog
  • Selling products online
  • Attracting leads via Google (and other search engines)
  • Launching an event
  • Creating an online booking calendar

The options and combinations are endless, which is why it’s a great idea to speak to an experienced web consultant who can explain your options and help you decide which direction is best.

Which content will be published?

It’s tempting to jump straight into a website build without planning your content. However, this may cause difficulties during the design and development stages of your project. By planning your website content at the beginning of your project, you will typically see a better result overall, with less difficulty along the way.

Basic website planning includes:

  • Creating a Sitemap showing the structure of your website
  • Describing the types of content that you will use
  • Deciding who will be writing and producing your content
  • Sketching your page layouts and content blocks

Who will manage the website?

Someone must be responsible for the website. In most cases, this is the website owner. With that being said, someone else may be responsible for maintaining and updating the website. It could be a staff member, an IT company (such as Katana IT) or another 3rd party webmaster. By deciding who will manage the website, you can also decide which attributes are most important and can build the website in a sustainable way to suit its users.

Give yourself a deadline date

If you need a quick, cheap website – sure, this can be achieved! If you want something more bespoke, you will need more time, so be realistic in your expectations. Consider how much work you plan to do yourself (or in-house) and how much you plan to outsource. Check that everyone involved has the capacity to meet their deadlines before you start the project.

Allocate a budget

You can build a website on just about any budget. Even with $0 you can build and host a free website using any one of the various platforms available, such as WordPress. But not everyone wants to build their own website, and this is not suitable for most businesses. We recommend talking to an experienced web consultant and being upfront about your budget, your deadline, and website requirements. They will discuss all of your options and help you get started in the right direction.
